CODE OF CONDUCT

By Tikum Mbah Azonga

Don`t sulk
Don`t pout
Smile
Better still, laugh
Make merry
Pray
And pray daily.

FIRE FROM A VALVE

By Tikum Mbah Azonga

I kicked the bucket
And enjoyed the splashed water
I saw it escape into the waiting valve
I didn`t greet the first passerby
For fear the stop gap measure might backfire
That`s why the yard boys didn`t sing
If only the firefighters knew
Where the real fire was
The world would be an entirely new place.

THE ROAD TO THE AGENCY

For the large Mbu (Baforchu) community in Ndokoti

By Tikum Mbah Azonga

Nothing is stymied yet
At least,not at Total Logbaba
Ndokoti comes after
Just before `Gare`.

When all is set
Stand back as if you were Ali Baba
During church service, go to the altar
But don`t return home with your car.

PAYMENT OF DUES

By Tikum Mbah Azonga

Have you paid your dues
Promptly and without regard for the sisal hemp?
When the handiwork master arrives
He is called Mr. Boniface
And he comes from Bui
When he comes and you start sneezing
He won`t believe you
No one will.

MATCH WITHOUT CYRUS VANCE

By Tikum Mbah Azonga

We lost the match
Because we traded it in advance
Had we asked Cyrus Vance
He would have shown us the catch.

THE BREAK OUT

By Tikum Mbah Azonga

We heard them scramble out and off
It was when the cock crowed twice
The sky was overcast
And bundled up in our cage we held our breath
Our voices drowned in the hissing of the crickets
Trees swayed and shook with the wind
Only the legendary peace plant stood in defiance.

We still alive, considered ourselves tough
As the unfortunate went away with their fat lies
We felt never before had the devil been so recast.
I remembered the day the French president ran out of breath
And the British premier mocked him about sour wickets
Now, I thought, I really must rescind
After all, the essence was what the Swiss call `confiance`.

THE NATIONAL SHAME

By Tikum Mbah Azonga

Shame on us
Shame on us all
And our country
We lay eggs
And then in a volte face
We turn around and break them with impunity
And suck them with avidity
All of them
And all by ourselves.

Shame on us
We who bear much desired children
We feed them
We clothe them
And then we turn round and auction them
To the highest bidder.

Shame on us
We carry our country’s name
And pay it homage
Or perhaps lip service
But at the same time
We plunder it
We rape it
We betray it
We sell it
To the highest bidder.
