By Tikum Mbah Azonga
The car was jammed in the mud
nd I, frozen like a chicken in the fridge
But when I crossed the ridge
Like Le Niveau Seuil of Monsieur Zask in Besançon
Mother immediately sent for her stud.

DIOCESAN WORK
By Tikum Mbah Azonga
Raise them all up
And clap for yourself
If tomorrow one falls
Send a quick note to the bishop.

UMBRELLAS WITHOUT STEMS
By Tikum Mbah Azonga
We have eight shiny end-game blades
All of them raring to go
Like the hungry elephant
When God`s mighty clock strikes two
Our mothers in their farms will hurry back
Babies or no babies
And the curtains will be drawn.

A LOSS TOO MANY
(For Pride and Lydie)
By Tikum Mbah Azonga
I lost my son
I lost him to the forces of evil
Within the twinkling of an eye
Where were the symptoms?
Where were the pains?
Where was the discomfort?
Just a tiny stretch
And my boy was gone.
Leaving us in the middle of the ocean
With no boat, no life jacket, no raft.
Surely this was no fun
For where was the anvil?
There was no tie
We hadn`t been to the proms
So Lydie and I labored in vain?
And I am a doctor to others giving comfort
Was this simply another Treaty of Utretch?
Whatever it was, here I was, lumbered with an unwanted bone
No music, not even Billy Ocean
Was this what I go for all my craft?

WAS IT A HOAX?
By Tikum Mbah Azonga
(For Ni Philip Asongwed in Douala)
Yes, I accepted it as a joke, only a joke
But she took it seriously
The lines on her angelic face said it all
The shop windows were closed, shut tight
Doors were ajar, regardless of the killer ants
Up on the iron roof, the Queen Bee
Too busy counting her pieces of gold and silver
Took no notice of the duel below.
I accepted because the Fon’s men meant to stroke
The horse’s back and recover the cowries sold wrongly
Never before had anyone dreamed Mokom in his fall
Would go down fighting because he knew he was right.
I knew too late they lied the book was Kant’s.
So, unwillingly but only as a joke I accepted to be
At the palace gate instead of the bank of the river
At least, I knew our Lord could never stoop so low.

DOUBLE INSULT
By Tikum Mbah Azonga
I fell of the trolley
While I counted the burnt bricks
Dad accused me of being nosy
And mum called me a son full of dirty tricks.

MY DAUGHTER
By Tikum Mbah Azonga
Sure, I recognize the face
It’s that of my daughter
When she was small, very small
What a world of a difference!
Today, though, she’s an ace
She’s big subject matter
Everywhere she walks tall
Ready to leap to my defence.
