THE DUSTY MESSAGE

By Tikum Mbah Azonga

Let them, all of them, know it
Tell it them
But for God`s sake
Don`t bell them
In case they ask you to start knitting.

THE JOKER AND THE EAR

By Tikum Mbah Azonga

The ear doesn`t hear any longer
Even when it goes to school
But if you call it a fool
It labels you a miserable joker.

THE HIDDEN CLAWS

By Tikum Mbah Azonga

Rain drops are a toothless dog
They don`t frighten me
So save your breath for your porridge
I`m not the cat that bears its claws.

OUR QUICK DRINK

By Tikum Mbah Azonga

I washed it down quickly
I gulped it down
And like the honourable member of parliament
I left the room giggling.

THE FIRST WALK

By Tikum Mbah Azonga

We`re not dehumanized
We`re just men on foot
Our gowns are heavy
That`s why we`re heavy.

THE CLEAN CAR

By Tikum Mbah Azonga

The car was washed
Not at the car wash
But where jilted lovers are dashed
And heavy cash is awash.

PRECURSOR GOODS

By Tikum Mbah Azonga

I`ll send them back
I`ll do so myself
But not through a proxy
So that when judgment times comes
I`ll be safely on the other side.

STRANDED WITHOUT THE SHOE MENDER

By Tikum Mbah Azonga

The shoe mender didn`t return home last night
And we all fear for his life
We don`t know what will become of his shoes
Or what will become of our shoes.

But this was always the problem
No one believed me when I said loud and clear
This shoe mender was all we had
Now, not even the headmaster or the pastor can help.

MONDAY AS AN ORDINARY DAY

By Tikum Mbah Azonga

Monday is a nice day, in it?
Esecially for those with knapsacks
We must go out fully armed
Because our adversaries are robust
But we mustn`t chicken out
No, we`re digging in our heels
So, let`s wait for Monday.

LUMPED LIKE THE MANYEMEN TWINS

By Tikum Mbah Azonga

What do you think?
Should we laugh or should we cry?
And what if the awaited report
If at all it comes
Proves the contrary?
Shall we then return the empty sacks
And make fools of ourselves
Or shall we lump ourselves together
Like the Manyemen twins.

DIALOGUE WITH THE CAT

By Tikum Mbah Azonga

Now, you`re talking
Before, you were just babbling
What I want you to do is mimic the governor`s cat
If it purrs, spread out your prayer mat.

THE COMMUNAL FINE

By Tikum Mbah Azonga

A dismal end it was
For all who came empty-handed
Anyone who left without their own child
Was ordered to return promptly
With an atlas, a shawl and tin of sardines
Returning residents were advised to return with
Party membership cards, rosaries and spare buttons.

THE DOOMED BRIDES MAID

By Tikum Mbah Azonga

Make all the noise you want
Scream from the bishop's porch
No one will hear you
Not even the rector
So, just know you're doomed.

ROLLING BANDWAGON

By Tikum Mbah Azonga

You can`t stop her
She`s simply unstoppable
You can only slow her down
So, don`t waste your time.

If you`re a new breed star
Then think her palpable
Beaten, defeated hands down
Because she staked her life on common lime.

NEGATIVE VIBES

By Tikum Mbah Azonga

Since it happened I haven`4 trusted
So just in case God`s bits of bread are encrusted
But if the Fon`s messenger asks why
Then why,won`t I simply lie?

UN MOT DU FOND

By Tikum Mbah Azonga

Je ne suis pas commerçant
Mais je suis grand
Si tu veux m’amadouer
Cherche d’abord Monsieur le Conseiller.

RED ALERT

By Tikum Mbah Azonga

You`re losing all your best men
Yes, but only one at a time
Even so, remember that it`s tiny drops
That make up the ocean.

The vestry isn`t a place for a weak abdomen
Or is it that you simply don`t give a dime?
One day when you need props
Everywhere you search, you`ll only find the sea.

THE SUICIDE

By Tikum Mbah Azonga

He was our beacon of hope
A wonderful child to have
Our eyes were always on him
He was also so handsome
With girls throwing themselves at his feet
Ako was our treasure, our all.

I saw him go out with a rope
I knew he could not starve
He had no more vim
He was never quarrelsome
But when I went to fetch him to come and eat
The rope was around his neck. What a fall!

WORDS THAT HURT

By Tikum Mbah Azonga

My heart jumps when I hear that utterance
Chaos in the backyard
Tell me, then
Who did it?
Was it the pastor’s wife again?
As if she has nothing else to do?
Or was it the new postmistress
Just to spite me
Because I failed to compliment her new dress?

CALL REPORT

By Tikum Mbah Azonga

You`re called to answer
Not to pay for missing gas bottles
Or to purchase new certificates of residence
That is the golden bottom line.

You may have come from Gloucester
Where the old abandoned Vauxhaul throttles
But mind you, if you need a line of defence
Revise your theory of the sine and cosine.
