THESE EYES OF MINE

(For Juliet, in remembrance of Romeo)

By Tikum Mbah Azonga

Lovely eyes
Sky eyes, by another name
After all, what does it matter?
A rose by any other name is still a rose
That’s why regardless of the measuring rod or litmus test
And even the test of time
They will prevail
So, I thank mum
And look up to the Almighty
For without them
Both, I mean
Would I have such a golden asset
With no liability
And at such little cost?

I am not one given to sighs
And that’s because I hate to maim
I know I’m not a light feather
Even if I have a secret aim
I’ve never owned a hose
So, friend, think nothing of inertia of rest
What counts are speed, velocity, space and time.

I own my kind of veil
Even for that kind of sum
For being a Gemini twin rated highly
I never hesitate to chase them
What they want is not my median but my mean
And if possible, my math set
If only they knew my ability
Then they would think my Akum origins lost.

atenchong Micheal a dit…

I think the first verse of this poem had a great impact on me because it focuses on the eyes which is a very importannt part of the body. Without the eyes you will never know what things look like so the eyes are indispensible to man. So the first verse of this poem is obvoiusly very interesting. But there is a question i want to ask. What are the blind supposed to praise in the place of their eyes?

Thanks Micheal.
For the blind reader who can therefore not read as such, three things replace the eyes. They are 1. the mind, 2. the mind, and 3. the mind. Yes.

Sidouane a dit…

i love poems that keep my thoughts busy like the piece you got. However the second part is a little unclear to me.

Sidouane. I have split the "unclear" stanza of the poem into two parts. See if its meaning is clearer now.
